Run Free, Ruby!

Ruby went to the Bridge on Friday.  She had been living with her mega esophagus since March and it was only getting worse.  She was keeping almost no food down, and had lost at least 25 pounds.  There is no cure for this condition in which the esophagus stretches out and no longer pushes the food into the stomach.  We tried many medicines and combinations of medicines, but nothing really helped.

Friday the vet told me that she thought that the bond between Ruby and I was the only thing keeping her alive.  Well, that's no good.

I've been going through pictures to try to put together this blog post and have enjoyed seeing Miss Ruby in her healthier, happier days with her brothers Bart and Gizmo.

my absolute favorite picture of Ruby - the lobster was a present from Bert

Ruby was rescued at 4 or 5 and this became her Forever Home.  She was loving, sweet, gentle and had the softest fur of any rottweiler I've ever met.  She held her own with Otto who outweighed her by at least 30 pounds.  She loved her mom.  She refused to be trained. She was a very good girl anyway.  I miss her.  I miss Bart.  I am enjoying spoiling Otto, spending more time with him and training him.  It will be nice to have an 'only dog' for a while.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of your "canine sister" Ruby. What a gem she was, and how lucky you were to have found one another. I hope you have found comfort in knowing that you truly made a difference for her, and in remembering the wonderful life you shared. She will missed, and not forgotten by people like me who are sharing your loss.

We are so sorry.. Your heart had been torn for a long time,, in trying to find ways to help Ruby.. You felt her pain.. And you unselfishingly,,, thought of her and not yourself, when you had to let her go.. You know she counted on you to know when it was time to lead her to the path.... yes,, she trusted you.
With tears, we share your pain.. We are beside you.
Ruby was the happiest dog ever, and now she will be telling all the friends at the Bridge,,,, how much love you gave to her.
We are sorry.

This makes us very sad. We were afraid this would be the outcome when we first read about her condition. SHE used to have an Irish Wolfhound who had the same thing.....same outcome. Hugs to all of you and keep spoiling Otto!

Mom Kim here - Sometimes it is just so very difficult, almost impossible to do what our mind tells us what the right thing to do is even when the heart falters and says, NOT YET! You did a very brave and yes, even honorable thing. I wish my vet had said that when I let my Angel Oreo go. Maybe Ruby was living for you but you made the decision that she should now be free of any discomfort and release her from any pain - you set her free.

Run free dear Ruby - you always will be a beautiful girl

It is hard to make the tough calls, but they are the right calls and you have to honor those calls made with love. They hurt, it will hurt, but you know it was the right choice for her and thus you will let go of the pain of making the choice. She would want you to do that. You set her free from the pain, set yourself free too.

Blessings and prayers for you and your family as you go through this. It is never easy to lose one of our furry ones, but it always seems this time of year makes it even harder some how. Peace to you and yours.

I've been out of touch too, but thinking about whether I want to start blogging again. After I set up a page for AUGIE, I began to follow a few blogs and, of course, yours was one of the first. I can't tell you how sorry I am for your losses. It just sucks, doesn't it? There are no words that really help, but I hope you're feeling a little better by now. Kathy (Tank)
