look for a new star in the sky tonight

Bart
4 December 2004 - 20 March 2015

God's speed, buddy.  You were the best!

~

I'll write more in a day or so and do a proper tribute to this beautiful dog.  In short, Sunday night I found a huge lump on his chest.  Monday he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma.  His chest cavety was full of fluid around his heart.  Tuesday I took him for a visit to his stream which he loved.  He declined rapidly.  Last night he could not get comfortable, was having trouble breathing and stopped eating.  The vet came to the house this afternoon.  Ruby and Otto both got to say good by to him.  I'm a wreck and I'm relieved that he's no longer so uncomfortable.  He told me with his eyes that it was time.

I am so, so sorry to read your news about your most handsome boy Bart. I know what a sad day this is for you, and like so many others, even though Bart was a dog I never met, I feel like he was because you shared him with all of us. There's a well known saying... 'Death is never sad, if the gift of life has been well used'. While I know that Bart's life was "well used" I'm still very, very sad for his loss. I hope you find comfort in your memories of him that can never be taken away, and peace in knowing you will see him again one day.

We are so sorry that this happened to our beloved Bart. We know how your heart is breaking right now,,, What you did for Bart is the kindest gift that you could have given.
Your very own heart could not stand one more moment of seeing him being in pain.
You knew what you had to do,, and you did it unselfishly- only thinking of Bart.
I know your heart is breaking.
Bart was our friend too,
I am sitting beside you right now,

The previous comment was mine - I only cut and pasted part of what I wished to. Know you are in our thoughts and prayers even if we are strangers to you in this place we call the internet. I hope the following offers you some comfort. You are in our thoughts and I hope Bart gets to meet Barkley up there, as he could use some company until I return to him.
LB Johnson - author and rescue dog Mom.

"When I as 18, and lost my lifelong companion, Sally - with me since birth, a small black and white cocker mix... my best and sometimes only friend, my soul-mate... She loved me, I believe more perfectly than I could ever have loved her in my inexperience. When she was 18 she died and I grieved and I cried and I still get tears in my eyes when I think of that sweet little soul who gave me so much. So, no, you never get over it, I do not know anyone who has loved a dog and has said goodbye that gets over it. The pain? As you know, it eases, it becomes sweet memory with time, you still get tears in your eyes, but the smiles and laughter at the remembered fun and antics of your 4-legged Pal returns to you.

My mother is part Iroquois, and although a lifelong Catholic carried with her some of the mythology handed down in her family. She knew my grief was raw and painful and that only time would help heal the wound in my heart. She said to me "Sally walks with you, and with time, she will allow you to feel her there beside you. During the first time of grief, you are blind to her, and that is as it should be, so she will know she is no longer in This World, but now walks in the Spirit World. When you are ready, she will help ease your pain by showing you memories, and helping you laugh again when you are ready to see that she is not lost to you, but always remains a part of you. Your tears will then be tears of joy at your good fortune at having known such a one."
From "The Book of Barkley - Love and Life Through the Eyes of a Labrador Retriever
